Gas Installation Work Method Statement
The Gas Installation Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 14 page procedure. This SWMS covers general safety aspects associated with installing gas to premises. This DOES NOT include installations to complex sites or Class B appliances that require submission of a safety case and further approvals.
This document DOES NOT include detailed instructions on how to install the service as this work should only be carried out by licensed professionals, it varies considerably at each site and rules governing the process is legislated by each State. A site/task-specific SWMS should be developed as needed.
The Gas Installation procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand. It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System.

Planning
Obtain authority and approval from Gas supplier prior to works being conducted.
Liaise with Principal Contractor. Ensure following is provided before work commences:
- Site specific induction (include location of amenities, first aid facilities, emergency plans and evacuation points, incident reporting, communication, contact persons etc)
- Health and Safety Rules for site
- Supervisory arrangements
- PPE requirements for site (hard hat, high visibility clothing, safety boots, etc)
- Types of hazards at site
- Site plans – showing no go zones for pedestrians
- Traffic Management plans
- Relevant SWMS and JSA's
- Site security requirements
Ensure all persons entering construction site have a Construction Induction Card (or equivalent).
Ensure all persons undertaking gas fitting are licensed / certified gas fitters/ plumbers.
Assess risks associated with task. Consider:
- Ventilation requirements
- Quantity of gas that could potentially be released
- Specific gravity and pressure in system
- Time worker will spend in gas atmosphere
- Sources of ignition.
