Spotters Work Method Statement
The Spotters or Safety Observers Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a comprehensive 4 page procedure outlining the steps for safely observing work practices. This SWMS includes Spotters used for several purposes (such as traffic management, hot works and use of plant). It does not include work in No Go Zones of electrical power lines. Wherever possible, physical means of separating hazards from persons should be used.
Spotters should only be used where this is not possible and after a risk assessment has been conducted for the task. The Spotters procedure is ready to use and is not a blank template. Simply add your company details, ABN, and include any site specific details or risks and make it specific to the task at hand.
It is then ready for printing and to be incorporated as part of your overall OHS System. The Spotters procedure can be used as part of your OHS inductions, for Tool box talks or tender applications.

Planning - Consider:
- Location of spotter (proximity to hazard)
- Visibility of spotter to operators
- Training requirements
- Familiarity to task/experience
- Changing conditions
- Environmental conditions (noise, light/glare, weather)
- Duties of spotter (include first aid, emergency and rescue)
- Type of communication (radio, hand signals, signs/batons)
- PPE required (high visibility, eye protection, ear protection etc)
- Sufficient number of spotters. A spotter should be responsible for one task and be dedicated to that task.
